Mandela Day in Danielskuil (Northern Province) - Part I of a II part story from the field written by Social Change Assistance Trust (Scat) Fieldworker Erna van der Westhuizen on 18th July 2011
I had an amazing Madiba day here in Danielskuil. I worked with Danielskuil’s community based organisation, the Kgatalopele Social Development Forum (KSDF). We were a group of about 40 people and were divided into 4 groups – a group for each settlement. I arrived at a house where two old people live, who are taking care of their disabled grandchild – Spokie. The house was in a total mess – literally, I can’t find other words for it. The toilet was leaking and all the rooms were dirty and wet. The double bed and cupboards of the grandparents were covered in “knopie spinnekoppe” and other insects. Read the full story
