Rights Education

The Black Sash educates and informs individuals and groups of their rights to enable them to take action and access these rights within the area of social protection (social assistance, social insurance, social services and subsidies) and consumer protection (debt and credit).

How?

  • We provide information through the various communication channels and the media on the Black Sash focus areas;
  • We conduct rights education workshops, information sessions and queue education;
  • We design and deliver training programmes and reference guides for paralegals and other rights education practitioners;
  • We gather and collate information from our rights education work with the specific intention of strengthening advocacy and rights education.

Why? Because we believe in making Human Rights real.

Advice Giving

The Black Sash enables and empowers individuals and groups to exercise their Socio-Economic Rights as prescribed by the laws in South Africa.

How?

  • We provide comprehensive and quality advice in the area of social protection and consumer protection (credit, debt and consumer contracts), labour and citizenship through our regional offices and satellite services;
  • We aim to stabilise our caseload to a minimum of 10 000 cases per annum, with a turn around time of less than twelve months, and a 75% closure rate;
  • We support the design and implementation of a Central Case Management System for the community advice office sector together with NADCAO;
  • We gather and collate casework data, from our regional offices and from partners with the specific intention of strengthening advocacy and rights education;
  • We help build capacity of civil society organisations, including community based advice offices, to give comprehensive and quality advice, and to improve their data management.

Why? Because we believe in making Human Rights real.
