Sash showcases its work at NGO expo

The Black Sash Provincial Office in Gauteng has again taken part in the annual NGO expo organised by Khanya College in Johannesburg. The college was founded in 1986 by the South African Committee for Higher Education (Sached) Trust. The expo is held each year at the Africa Museum in Newtown and provides the Sash with a great opportunity to showcase the important work we do each day as well as build networks and partnerships with our civil society organisations.

Khanya provides an alternative form of tertiary education in the sense that it encourages students to return and serve their communities when they complete their studies.

Sash helps the people of Paterson

Paterson is a small town located between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth. It is a very poor area surrounded by game reserves. Most of the people who live there are either unemployed or doing seasonal jobs. The Black Sash has been working alongside Tuse Manene of the Paterson advice office, which operates without any real funding or resources. Mr Manene initially approached us with a list of 24 clients requiring assistance with delayed and unresolved UIF cases. Two of our paralegals visited Paterson on 18th March 2010 and found 43 people waiting for them in the community hall. Word had spread that help was on hand and by the end of the day, we had opened  files on UIF, COIDA and Labour cases.

Sash protects the rights of two farm workers in Grahamstown

The right to fair labour practice is an entrenched constitutional right to protect both workers and employers. Workers in our country fought for more than one hundred years for these rights. When the constitution was negotiated in the early 1990's, workers ensured that the right to fair labour practice was included. Flowing from this constitutional right came the Labour Relations Act (LRA) and other invaluable labour legislation that regulates conditions of work and employment relationships in the workplace, including on farms.

Sash helps security guard claim his social insurance benefits

Thobani Siko was 29 years old and unemployed when he visited our offices in Grahamstown for the first time on 17th September 2007. He was looking for help and advice regarding an application he had made to claim his private security sector provident fund (PSSPF) benefits from National Benefit Consultants (NBC). Thobani’s former employer, IGS Security Services, was operating from Vredenburg in the Western Cape but during our consulation, it emerged that Thobani’s wages were actually being paid by Tamasa Outsourcing Services CC (a labour broker). An amount of R93.54 had been deducted each month as part of his provident fund contribution. Another complication was that the provident fund was no longer administered by NBC. ABSA Consultants and Actuaries had taken over as administrators.
