Sash attends Private Security Sector roadshow

Staff at the Black Sash offices in KwaZulu-Natal have taken part in a couple of roadshows organised by the Trustees of the Private Sector Security Fund. The events took place on the 24th and 25th of August with the objective of updating civil society and other interested parties on the latest developments within the Fund. We were disapointed that ABSA (the current administrators of the Fund) and PSIRA (Private Security Regulatory Authority) failed to attend the roadshows.

Sash hosts workshop on new Consumer Protection Act

The Black Sash offices in the Eastern Cape organised a day long workshop in August on the new Consumer Protection Act. The event also focused on the rights of consumers when it comes to debt collection as well as the Prescription Act and other legal procedures used when creditors want to re-possess customer goods. The workshop was attended by paralegals from community-based advice offices and parliamentary constituency offices, Community Development Workers (CDWs), representatives from Ward Committees, Municipal Councillors and NGOs. The overall objective was to interrogate, investigate and analyze the Consumer Protection Act which comes into effect in October this year.

Sash launches domestic worker rights campaign

The Black Sash – in partnership with the Labour Research Service, the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union (SADSAWU) and UWC’s Social Law Project – launched a domestic worker rights education and advocacy campaign to co-incide with Women's month in August. As part of the drive, the Black Sash held a 'Domestic Workers’ Dialogue’ with the Portfolio Committee on Labour in Parliament on Tuesday 24th of August 2010. The purpose of the conversation with MP’s is to discuss the recommendations made at the recent International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention on ‘Decent work for Domestic Workers’.
