Sash showcases its work at NGO expo

The Black Sash Provincial Office in Gauteng has again taken part in the annual NGO expo organised by Khanya College in Johannesburg. The college was founded in 1986 by the South African Committee for Higher Education (Sached) Trust. The expo is held each year at the Africa Museum in Newtown and provides the Sash with a great opportunity to showcase the important work we do each day as well as build networks and partnerships with our civil society organisations.

Khanya provides an alternative form of tertiary education in the sense that it encourages students to return and serve their communities when they complete their studies.

Sash helps the people of Paterson

Paterson is a small town located between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth. It is a very poor area surrounded by game reserves. Most of the people who live there are either unemployed or doing seasonal jobs. The Black Sash has been working alongside Tuse Manene of the Paterson advice office, which operates without any real funding or resources. Mr Manene initially approached us with a list of 24 clients requiring assistance with delayed and unresolved UIF cases. Two of our paralegals visited Paterson on 18^th March 2010 and found 43 people waiting for them in the community hall. Word had spread that help was on hand and by the end of the day, we had opened files on UIF, COIDA and Labour cases.

Sash resolves Provident fund claim

Miss Nondanele Sandi a 60 years old mother to four children. She was employed as a cook by the College of Transfiguration (former St Pauls Theological College) in Grahamstown. While employed at the College, she contributed retirement benefits to the CPSA Layworkers Pension Scheme that is administered by Liberty Corporate. She had worked at the College for 35 years but when she retired, was unsure how to claim her retirement benefits from the pension scheme. On the advice of a friend, she visited our Grahamstown office on 17^th February 2010 to seek advice and guidance.
