Black Sash welcomes the announcement of the Gaza ceasefire on January 15th which is the first phase of the deal reached between Hamas and Israel on Wednesday which includes a pause in the war and the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli custody.
We stand with Palestinians, who have faced over 15 months of continuous violence, and are currently battling to survive in temporary shelter lacking food, water, and essential supplies. We call for accountability!
Thousands of innocent lives have been killed in the escalating violence in the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel since October 2023, there must be accountability for genocide under international law.
The liberation of hostages and detainees will provide solace to families in Israel and throughout the occupied Palestinian territory; however, it will not take away the hardships they have endured during their time in captivity.
We honor the courage and resilience of the Palestinian people. While the release of hostages and detainees may offer comfort, it will not alleviate the suffering they have endured – we call on individuals, governments, and organisations around the world to continue to support the people of Palestine by calling for accountability and an end to the genocide.
“We welcome the ceasefire. We stand with the people of Palestine. The ceasefire shows the importance of activism and solidarity – we are stronger together. We will continue to speak the truth to those in power and show solidarity for those who cannot speak their truth to power,” said Rachel Bukasa, Executive Director, Black Sash.
