Black Sash has proudly celebrated its 70th anniversary with a gala dinner, which saw the announcement of the winners of its inaugural Human Rights Awards held at the Norval Foundation, the event brought together South Africa’s leading lights in social justice, politics, and civil society.
The event, a moving celebration of decades of courage, compassion, and commitment, marked a new chapter for the organisation that has championed human rights and social justice for 70 years.
A letter by President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation for the work we do with communities.“The existence and impact of the Black Sash through the decades causes us to appreciate the non-racial nature of the struggle against apartheid and the power of ideas and actions of small numbers of committed and principled individuals.”
The President further wrote, “as government, we appreciate (Black Sash’s) continued work in social protection and initiatives in vulnerable communities as an important partner in building A Nation That Works For All.”
A video message of support from the Constitutional Development and Justice Deputy Minister, Andries Nel shared that “the role of the Black Sash has never been more vital. Let us recommit ourselves to their values: to equality, justice and the belief that even one voice raised in conscience can change the world.”
“The Black Sash Human Rights Awards recognise those who dare to make a difference, ordinary people achieving the extraordinary. This inaugural event is about honouring today’s changemakers and inspiring the next generation to defend justice and dignity,” said Rachel Bukasa, Executive Director of Black Sash.
The gala dinner and awards was attended by anti-Apartheid stalwarts, civil society leaders, government department heads, SASSA, Postbank, ABSA, and high profile politicians whoall gathered to honour South Africa’s champions of human rights.
