SASSA Gold Cards are no longer working: What grant beneficiaries need to know

From 1 September 2026, SASSA Gold Cards are no longer working. Beneficiaries who still rely on these cards will need to have switched to the new Postbank Black Card or another bank to continue accessing your social grant.

While the deadline has been postponed several times in the past, with SASSA and Postbank allowing beneficiaries to continue using expired Gold Cards while they completed the switch, the 31 August 2026 was set as the final cut-off date. From now on, the Gold Card itself will no longer function.

Black Sash, which runs a national helpline and conducts community-based monitoring of social grants, is supporting beneficiaries through the transition. If you have not yet switched to a new card or changed your banking details, here is what you need to know.

Does my grant disappear if my Gold Card no longer works?

No. The card is what has stopped working, not the account or the grant. Kgothatso Sibanda, Helpline Manager at Black Sash, explains: “The money is still paid into the Postbank account, just like any other private bank account where cards expire and need to be replaced. The grant remains available; the challenge is accessing it without a valid card.” If SASSA has already paid your grant into your Postbank account, that money is still there. You will just need a valid card or another way to access it.

I still have a Gold Card. What must I do now?

You have two main options:

  1. Switch to the Postbank Black Card, or
  2. Move your grant to another bank account of your choice.

Option 1: Get a Postbank Black Card

  • The replacement is free.
  • You can find your nearest card replacement site by dialling *120*355# on your phone.
  • You can also call the Postbank call centre on 0800 535 455 for more information.

Participating retailers include Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar, where Postbank has set up replacement points.

Option 2: Move your grant to a private bank

If you prefer to receive your grant into a private bank account:

  1. Download the SASSA Annexure C form (available on the SASSA website).
  2. Take the form to your chosen bank and have them complete it with your account details.
  3. Take the completed form to a SASSA local office and submit it in person.
    • This form cannot be submitted online because of the sensitive information involved.
  4. Once SASSA captures your new banking details, your grant will be paid into that account from the next payment cycle.

Important: If you want the change to apply for a specific month, you have to complete this process before the 20th of that month, because that is when the payment window closes for the following month’s grant.

Note: Postbank services for grants are subsidised by SASSA and do not attract bank charges. If you move to a private bank, normal bank charges will apply.

What if I am sick, elderly, bedridden or cannot travel?

Black Sash’s helpline has received calls from people who are unable to travel to a Postbank site or SASSA office because they are ill, frail, or disabled.

“At present, Postbank is not conducting home visits for card swaps,” says Sibanda. “However, beneficiaries who cannot travel can appoint a procurator – essentially a power of attorney – who can visit a SASSA local office on their behalf to change their banking method.”

A procurator can:

  • Be a trusted family member or friend.
  • Go to a SASSA office with the necessary documents to change the way the grant is paid (for example, from a Gold Card/Postbank account to another bank account, or to another payment method).

If you need help understanding how to appoint a procurator, you can contact the Black Sash helpline (details below).

Will I still be able to get my grant in September?

SASSA has confirmed the following payment dates for September 2026:

  • Older Persons Grant: Wednesday, 2 September 2026
  • Disability Grant: Thursday, 3 September 2026
  • Children’s Grant: Friday, 4 September 2026
  • Other grants: Monday, 7 September 2026 (including beneficiaries whose grants are under review)

If your grant is already paid into a Postbank account but you no longer have a working card:

  • The money will still be in your account.
  • You may not be able to access it immediately at an ATM or till point.
  • Once you get your new card or change your banking details, you should be able to access the funds.

Black Sash will be monitoring the September payment cycle closely to see how many people are able to access their grants and where problems arise.

Where can I get help?

If you have questions or need assistance:

  • Postbank call centre: 0800 53 54 55
  • USSD for nearest replacement site: *120*355#
  • SASSA WhatsApp: 082 601 0111 (to check your status and whether your grant is under review)

Remember, updating to a Postbank black card is free. No one should charge a fee to replace a card or assist with a payment change, and no legitimate bank, SASSA official or payment agent should ever ask for your PIN, one-time password or password by phone, text message or link.
